Playing in the street 31 Jul 2007
Is it unsafe and anti-social to play in the street?

The number of children playing in the street has decreased dramatically over the past thirty years. The National Childrens’ Bureau has found that where seven in ten adults used to play in the street, only two in ten children do so now. They want to encourage more children to play outside their homes. But Britain has one of the worst records for child pedestrian casualties in Europe, while others regard children playing in the street as anti-social behaviour. So has the time come to reverse the trend, or is playing in the street unsafe and undesirable?

Jane Little talks to Adrian Voce, director of PlayDay and to Liz Fraser, author of The Yummy Mummy Survival Guide.
