The state of the rural economy 15 July 2009
sheep
How are farmers faring?

New figures from the Country Landowners’ Association suggest that confidence is returning to parts of the rural economy. Tourism is doing well because of the weakness of sterling. Land values are holding their own. But how are farmers getting on, as the rest of the country suffers in the economic downturn? How bad is life for farmers? Are those in rural areas more adept at weathering economic downturns than those in other sectors? Clare Parnell, a sheep farmer from Cornwall and Sue Gaudie who has a dairy herd in Yorkshire join Jenni in discussion.
