The changing face of marriage in Britain in the 1700s
In the 1700s, satirical prints were published and displayed for the amusement of spectators and love, relationships and marriage were regular subjects for their humour. Many of the prints have now been brought together in a book called ‘Love and Marriage’ by Jennifer Ramkalawon, who is a curator of prints and drawings at the British Museum. She joins Jenni to talk about the insight these pictures offer a modern viewer. They are joined by author Wendy Moore, whose book ‘Wedlock’ tells the story of an 18th Century marriage in which ‘Georgian Britain’s worst husband met his match’.
Love and Marriage by Jennifer Ramkalawon is published by the British Museum Press ISBN 978-0-7141-2663-0
Wedlock by Wendy Moore is published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson ISBN 978-0-297-85331-2
Sixteen prints from the book are on display in the Prints and Drawings room at the British Museum until the end of March 2009.
