Organic Wool
The environmental impact of cheap knit-wear

A cashmere jumper can cost less than fifty pounds these days but campaigners say the price the environment is paying is potentially catastrophic. While the environmental impact of mass produced cotton has been well documented, less is known about the impact of cheap knit-wear. Mark and Spencers is stocking an organic jumper this year but the organic wool industry is still in its infancy. Reporter Sarah Swadling meets Julia Hopson from the Cornish Organic Wool Company and the women who complete the chain, from field to yarn. Miriam also speaks to Lee Holdstock from the Soil Association and Lucy Siegle, columnist for the Observer magazine and author of 'Green Living in the Urban Jungle'
