Suffragette and political campaigner and her life in Woodford
Sylvia Pankhurst is best known as the suffragette daughter of Emmeline. She was also an indefatigable activist for East End women’s rights; an anti-First World War protester; a supporter of the Russian Revolution who then went on to back the Republicans in Spain and lead the campaign against the Italian occupation of Ethiopia. What is less well known is that, from 1924, she spent thirty two years of her life living in the quiet backwater of Woodford on the borders of Epping Forest. With a Sylvia Pankhurst Commemorative Day taking place this Sunday in Woodford, Ritula is joined by biographer Shirley Harrison and one-time Mayor of Redbridge Linda Perham to explore what took place behind the closed doors of the suburban streets where Sylvia lived.
