Honour Killings 15 June 2007
Banaz Mahmod
Earlier this week, the father and uncle of 20 year old Banaz Mahmod were convicted of her murder - a so-called ‘honour killing’. It’s a case which has received widespread media coverage. Now Woman’s Hour brings together Commander Steve Allen, the Association of Chief Police Officers’ Lead on Honour Killings and Gona Saed, of the Middle East Women’s Centre, who is organising a forum to bring together women’s organisations in a collective effort to tackle these crimes. They are joined by Dr Aisha Gill, Senior lecturer in Criminology at Roehampton University, and Chair of the Newham Asian Women’s Project to discuss what can be done to address the underlying cultural views and community acceptance of violence towards women.
