Beatrice Were will receive the Human Rights Watch Defender Award on November 7th 2006, for her work with people living with HIV/AIDS. In the mid 1990s, Beatrice was one of the first Ugandans to declare her HIV-positive status publicly; she went on to found the National Community of women Living with AIDS, which now helps some 40,000 women across Uganda. More recently, she has been outspoken against shifts in her country’s AIDS policy. Jenni talks to her about her activism, and the discrimination, stigma and legal wrangling that she faced after her own husband died of AIDS.
