Devastation in a town in Burma’s Irrawaddy Delta

Cyclone Nargis hit Burma on Saturday. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands left homeless. It is the worst natural disaster to hit the region since the 2004 tsunami.

The military junta that rules Burma does not allow the foreign press into the county, making accurate information difficult to come by. But images taken from a NASA satellite are beginning to give a picture of the scale of devastation.

As flood water is difficult to see from space, the lower image uses infra red imaging to make the extent of flood waters plainly visible.

When compared with the top picture, taken before the cyclone hit, you can clearly see the flood waters around Yangon (Rangoon) and the mouth of the Irrawaddy.
