The Jarrow March

Monday 1 December 2008 20:00-20:30 (Radio 4 FM)

Michael Portillo presents a series revisiting the great moments of history to discover that they often conceal other events of equal but forgotten importance.

The Jarrow March of 1936 has been remembered as a dignified demonstration of the struggle of the unemployed. However, Michael discovers a much more violent and dangerous march that preceded it in 1932, which ended with bloodshed and rioting in Hyde Park.
