Its just over a year since production came to an abrupt end at the MG Rover plant in Longbridge, South Birmingham, where Herbert Austin produced his first motorcar in 1905. During the past 12 months Radio 4 has been charting the fortunes of the 6000 redundant Rover workers in the West Midlands, where its just been announced that the Peugeot workforce may face similar problems. In the first of three programmes, Adrian Chiles looks back over the chequered history of Rover.
