 | | | | A Manx shearwater in the capable hands of researcher Jane Mathews | Manx Shearwaters
Lionel Kelleway travels to Skomer, a small island off the Pembrokshire coast, to celebrate the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Manx shearwaters. These enigmatic seabirds migrate thousands of miles from South America to breed on the few islands around the UK that remain free of ground predators like rats, cats and foxes. Our seas provide plenty of fish for these long-lived birds and they return year after year to the same underground burrow.
Over 90% of the global population spends the summer in the UK which has a responsibility to ensure their survival. Fortunately, they are doing well but Juan Brown, the warden on Skomer, says we must remain vigilant to prevent rats or cats landing on the island. Lionel joins Juan and fellow warden, Jane Mathews, as they carry out their research and monitor the birds' nests. It is a magical experience for Lionel, surrounded by a cacophony of ghostly voices, as he witnesses the birds returning at night to find their mates. | | | RELATED LINKS Wildlife Trust for South and West Wales
