"Nature is full of surprises, so the programme can investigate fascinating and challenging areas in
our relations with the natural world without being too technical or preachy. My job is brilliant because, as a link between the listener and the subject, I can discover new information and ideas which help people make up their own minds on important issues."

 | | | | Red squirrels are now rare in England and Wales. | Squirrels Wars
Grey squirrels are advancing across the United Kingdom to the detriment of native red squirrels. By competing for food and spreading parapox - a disease that is fatal to reds - grey squirrels are gradually replacing the native red squirrels. Greys now outnumber reds 66 to 1 and some scientists predict that reds could be extinct in the UK within 20 years.
Paul Evans visits the frontline of the grey invasion in Cumbria where Red Alert North West are defending the reds' last few strongholds. They are hoping to provide the best habitat for red squirrel survival, as they are better suited to conifer plantations than natural oak woodland. Paul also visits Anglesey where conservationists have taken a more aggressive approach - they have culled nearly all the greys on the island and are now re-introducing reds. But not all 2.5 million grey squirrels in the UK can be culled so Paul asks how greys and reds can co-exist in the Bristish countryside.
