 | | | | Yvonne with the green turtles of Bali | Lizards
Nature this week completes a trilogy of programmes in which Yvonne Ellis undertakes a personal quest to find an unforgettable collection of lizards. On Rinca Island in Indonesia, she comes face to face with the Komodo Dragon the world’s largest lizard, whose breath can be fatal, but whose lifestyle contains some surprisingly tender moments. Although it has been a tourist attraction in the past, the Dragon is no longer provided with goat carcases on Komodo Island and that has led to some dramatic changes in the way we view these reptiles.
In the scorching deserts of Sonora, she meets the Gila Monster, a bulldog lizard which lurks in rock crevices and chews venom into its prey. This pink and black-spotted lizard manages to use warning coloration and camouflage to its advantage. In the Galapagos Islands she dives with the seaweed-eating marine iguanas to discover that their life underwater is fraught with dangers in the churning surf of the Humboldt Current. Being a sun-loving lizard, it’s always a risk if you want to feed beneath the waves and Yvonne discovers just how they do it. | | | RELATED LINKS BBCi Nature
