Lioness and cubs

All kinds of animals dote on their young. But nurturing offspring hasn't traditionally been regarded as important in the process of natural selection.

Indeed conventional theory suggests that the main evolutionary goal of any species is reproduction. 

A new theory from Ronald Lee, University of California, looks at how nurturing behaviour has evolved and its importance in species survival.
