FUEL FOR THOUGHT

Fuel for thought is the subject of this programme as Tom Heap investigates the green reality of electric vehicles and visits two pioneering projects working towards a hydrogen future for both the car and the home. At Birmingham University research is being done to develop affordable hydrogen fuel cell technology.  They're road testing five hydrogen powered cars currently being used to deliver mail on campus.  While a company in Sheffield believes they've made the ultimate breakthrough in hydrogen technology.  They've developed a 'green box' which can store hydrogen produced from renewable electricity that can be used to power a home or drive a car with a converted combustion engine.  The British International Motor Show included a large display of 'green' vehicles this year, with Japanese car manufacturers Honda and Nissan demonstrating their prototype hydrogen fuelled vehicles which are to be rolled out in Japan and the USA over the coming year.
