'I really enjoy working on Costing the Earth, because it has the time to get its teeth into a subject and the resources to look at it critically. I hope it manages to say something new about most of the subjects it covers.'

 | | | | Murmansk Harbour is set to become the biggest oil terminal outside the Middle East. | Black Gold in the Arctic
The Barents Sea is Europe’s marine jewel. Above the Arctic Circle but warmed by the Gulf Stream from the south it supports an unrivalled variety of wildlife and the last concentrations of Europe’s fish stocks.
The treacherousness of its iceberg-infested waters has so far protected it from exploitation but man’s ever more desperate search for oil is bringing its isolation to an end. Soon some of the world’s most dangerous waters will be alive with tankers.
The dangers are obvious but this is a region desperate for investment. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union the vast naval base of Murmansk has rotted to a fraction of its former glory. Its harbours and fjords are clogged with mothballed nuclear submarines and their deadly fuel stocks. Money is desperately needed to secure and dismantle this deadly legacy.
In ‘Costing the Earth’ Alex Kirby asks if Arctic Russia can afford to refuse the oil companies?
| | | | | The city of Murmansk is in desperate need of economic revival. |
