Eldonian village
On the site of an old sugar refinery, two miles north from the centre of Liverpool, lies the Eldonian village. In an area where people have lived in both slums and tenements, this has become a model of rented housing for the new century.
When the residents of Eldon Road in Vauxhall were faced with the prospect of being rehoused and scattered all over the city, they banded together to form a group they called the Eldonians. Their aim was to stay together in the same neighbourhood in better housing, and they formed an association which, after a catalogue of difficulties, built their own homes.
The driving force behind the whole scheme has been Tony McGann, who is the chairman of the Eldonians. A tireless visionary, his refusal to take no for an answer, whoever says it, has helped the group overcome every adversity. The project has been so successful that it now attracts interest not only from around the country but abroad as well.
In this edition of Changing Places, Jessica Holm goes to Liverpool to discover the story behind the smart new houses. As well as meeting the people involved, she finds a new way of policing the village, and talks to partners who are now building private houses in the same area.
