Broughshane village

On the road from Ballymena to the Antrim coast, you pass through a place which calls itself the garden village of Ulster. This is Broughshane and the description is an accurate one. On almost every window there is a window box, there are hanging baskets everywhere and even the biggest employer, the chicken hatchery, almost disappears under a mound of shrubs and flowers.

In Changing, Chris Baines visits Broughshane villiage to find out how it has been transformed from a rather undistinguished place into a model for the whole of Ulster.

The organisation behind the whole scheme is the Broughshane village Improvement Committee, which is an umbrella organisation with 26 other groups affiliated to it. The two people who are behind the committee are the Wilson brothers, Ian and Sandy, and their enthusiasm seems to infect the whole village. From a vintage tractor club to the Women’s Institute everyone is involved.

The latest project is the renovation of a derelict flax mill, turning it into a centre for activities such as the sixty fiddlers who meet there weekly. Next to the mill the is the village nursery which provides the plants for all the displays.

Chris meets some of the people involved, and discovers the social and economic regeneration which started with flowers.
