Maiden Bradley Village Shop
Last autumn the only shop in the Wiltshire village of Maiden Bradley was threatened with closure. Like so many other similar stores it seemed as if it was going to succumb to the pressure from supermarkets in nearby towns. The villagers had other ideas, however, and they formed a co-operative to take over the running of the shop.
In this week’s Changing Places Jessica Holm visits Maiden Bradley to discover how the new shop is run, and how the whole village is behind the project. She meets everyone involved, from the staff to local suppliers as well as customers, and hears how even the Post Office was saved.
The shop is a great success, responding to requests from customers, and providing everything from a dry cleaning service to freshly baked organic bread. It has become a real focal point in the village, catering to people who have lived in the village for years as well as newcomers, who may well have shopped elsewhere.
As Jessica discovers, this is an example for other villages all over the country, all you need is a lot of energy and to refuse to take no for an answer.
