Environmentalist Chris Baines takes on a subject close to his heart as he finds out how the residents of one London borough have formed a trust to look after their parks and gardens.
Land in Southwark sells for several million pounds an acre, so local people are having to work hard to keep a part of their environment green and pleasant.
The Bankside Open Spaces Trust was founded to make sure Southwark’s parks are improved and maintained and to add value to the services provided by the local council. They are also encouraging people to plant window boxes and to take an interest in urban gardening.
The idea came from three residents meeting in a pub about five years ago. Now with twelve parks to look after, the trust has gone from strength to strength. It has now been chosen to become one of only two demonstration projects for the government’s new policy about the future of parks and open spaces.
Chris talks to the people involved and discovers how this project could be the model for communities all over the country, and how the government view the importance of green places in our cities.
