"What I love about Case Notes is that it's about real medicine - real patients and health professionals telling it how it is. These days staying healthy is as much about knowing how to get the most out of the health service as about knowing all the ins and outs of disease."

 | | | | Thyroid
In Case Notes this week, presenter Graham Easton explores thyroid conditions with his guest Professor John Lazarus, president of the British Thyroid Association. The programme will explore underactive thyroid which affects two per cent of people over the age of 60, the treatment of an overactive thyroid, and the importance of blood tests in gauging the health of your thyroid.
The thyroid gland sits at the front of your neck, rather like a fleshy bow-tie. It’s main job is to regulate the body’s metabolism, and problems with the thyroid can have far reaching effects for the whole body. Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, can give rise to a huge number of symptoms, from weight gain and depression to constipation and dry skin. The problem is usually easy to rectify by replacing the low levels of thyroid hormone T4.
But many people with hypothyroidism who have been treated with thyroid hormones still feel tired and overweight even when their blood tests show normal thyroid gland function. So who’s right? The blood test (which most doctors believe), or the patient? Graham talks to patients with hypothyroidism and questions his guest Professor Lazarus. There is also a report on the benefits of radio-iodine and surgery in treating overactive thyroid glands, and we hear about the importance of iodine in keeping your thyroid healthy.
And if you have a question about the Thyroid you can call the Action Line on 0800 044 044.
