If you thought the appeal was just about the amount that is raised, you would be wrong! Back in February this year, Nigel Havers presented the Radio 4 Appeal on behalf of Ovarian Cancer Action.
It takes a few weeks for all the donations to come in, but a total of approximately £16, 000 was donated by Radio 4 listeners. However, as a direct result of the Appeal, the charity will receive £225, 000 as the result of a legacy.
Frances Reid, Head of communications at Ovarian Cancer Action, informed the Radio 4 Appeal what happened,
"We were delighted with the appeal. Not only did it generate £16,000 towards research and raising awareness, but it introduced us to many new people, helping grow our database significantly, which as a charity relatively new to fundraising is vital. The benefits went even beyond that though. As a direct result of hearing the appeal, 2 executors of a will got in touch, having a sum of money that needed to go to ovarian cancer research. We met with them, showed them our work, and they have now confirmed that we will receive in excess of £225,000 as soon as probate is complete. That is the largest single donation we have received to date, so thank you Radio 4!"
You never know what the power of words can do...
