Educated at Cambridge (double first class degree in Biochemistry, 1959). His scientific interest in understanding the brain led him to take a PhD at the Institute of Psychiatry in London (1961).

After periods of postdoctoral research at Oxford (Fellow, New College), Rome (NIH Fellow) and with the Medical Research Council in London he became in 1969 Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at Britain's newly formed Open University, where, aged 31, he was one of the UK's youngest full professors.

At the Open University, he established and has directed ever since the Brain and Behaviour Research Group and has focussed his research on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of learning and memory.
