The Presenter

Sue Lawley, who chairs the Reith Lectures, is best-known to Radio 4 listeners as the former presenter of Desert Island Discs.

Sue Lawley

Born in Dudley in the West Midlands, Sue started her career as a trainee journalist with the Western Mail and the South Wales Echo in Cardiff.

She joined the BBC in 1970 as a freelance researcher and, in 1972, became one of the main presenters of the early evening current affairs programme, Nationwide. She went on to present the Nine O'Clock News and the Six O'Clock News.

For 17 years she presented Radio 4's Desert Island Discs and has chaired the BBC's Reith Lectures for the past five years.
