Bollywood is the largest film industry in the world, producing over 800 movies a year and captivating audiences of well over a billion throughout India and around the world. It's famous for its spectacle - sweeping melodrama and terrific song and dance numbers. But look beneath the surface and there's a Bollywood that's less well known - a canny social engineer, political agitator and moral focus for a newly independent nation.
