In 1955, celebrated documentary maker Denis Mitchell took one of the new portable tape recorders out onto the streets of British cities after dark, to record the voices of the people he found - the vagrants, criminals, the hopeful and the hopeless.

This programme updates Mitchell's documentary by recording material with the people on the night-time streets of British cities 50 years on. Some of the stories - of the alcoholics, the drunks and the street people - may well have an eerie familiarity. Other stories, like those of call-centre staff, rent boys and the nuns living through the London bombings, show how radically our patterns of life have changed over the period.
