Christmas is supposed to be a bumper time for retailers but this year one analyst is forecasting 'Armageddon on the High Street.' And The Confederation of British Industry says that sales in November were the worst recorded for twenty two years. Yet the picture is mixed. The latest figures from the British Retail Consortium show that sales are not down - but up. And some retailers are clearly doing extremely well. Majestic Wine recently reported its twelfth year of record profits So how does a retailer cope in such uncertain times? Competing against the buying might of the supermarkets, many of which have now expanded away from food, and on-line stores which have enjoyed an annual increase in sales, is proving to be a quite a balancing act.
