The Business of the Future

Who'd dare to attempt to forecast the future in these unpredictable times? Plan your financial future with a nice fat pension and like as not, the company, and its pension plan, will founder.

Economic forecasters had to revise their figures after events such as 9/11 and the SARS epidemic. Even Albert Einstein once got it wrong when he declared "there's not the slightest indication that nuclear energy will ever be obtainable". Alexander Graham Bell perhaps was simply being modest when he forecast "one day there will be a telephone in every major city.

Nowadays, forecasting the future has become big business. More and more companies are sprouting up to serve increasing numbers of public & private sector clients. But just what methods do they employ when it comes to crystal ball gazing? And can you make reliable forecasts for 20 or 30 years ahead? Heather Payton also asks the forecasters what social & business trends lie ahead and whether we may, one day, be forced to consume less.
