Footloose and fancy-free?
Imelda Marcos loved them and filled her closets with them, and foot fetishists probably absolutely adore them. In Britain we spend five billion pounds a year on shoes, an average of six pairs each.
These days, shoe designers are up there with the fashion giants; who hasn't heard of Manolo Blahnik or Jimmy Choo? Even the British army is getting in on the act, lending its name to a new range of running shoes.
But although we love our shoes as never before, it's becoming seriously difficult in Britain to make money out of either manufacturing or selling them.
But here's some good news: for those of us who've always associated fashionable shoes with pain, if that doesn't sound too masochistic, there's a new trend: comfort. It sounds like bliss but won't it make you look like Minnie Mouse?
Guests:
Sue Saunders senior lecturer, Cordwainers College, London College of Fashion
Rosemary Wallin shoe designer
Joshua Isaac Smith Masai Barefoot Technology
Matt Joutsikoski Zebra Footwear
