The supermarket or small local producers?

Small food producers

Like many things in life, we seem to be a little bit schizophrenic when it comes to food. On the one hand we say we’re fed up with what the supermarkets sell us, and we want a return to the old days when you could buy from small local producers, when food was fresh and it tasted of what it was supposed to taste of. But then what we actually do is pop down to the local supermarket because you can park and it makes life easier.

Research by a business school predicts that there might not be a single independent food store left in the UK by the year 2050. But do we really care? Or is the future one in which the small food producers will sell to us via the internet or indeed enter the fray and take their chances selling to the giant supermarket chains?

Guests:

Lynda Brown
food writer & critic author of 'The New Shopper's Guide to Organic Food'

Martin Hansford
Tregida Smokehouse

Karen Todd
ASDA local sourcing manager

Karen Kennedy
Fleetwood Food Co-Operative

Justin James
