Ageing and retirement

What can the UK learn from other countries?

The developed world is ageing - birth rates are falling, people are living longer and in the near future older workers will be in demand. And for many, retirement is looking increasingly unaffordable.

In the UK the Government is forecasting that in just two years time there will be more people over the state pension age than under 16. Employers around the world are having to face the prospect of an older workforce.

Last week draft regulations for next year's age discrimination legislation were published. There will be a retirement age of 65, workers will be able to ask employers to let them keep on working beyond that age but the request can be refused. Five years after implementation the legislation will be reviewed again - many believe mandatory retirement will then be abolished.

In today's Nice Work we look at how other European countries are trying to keep older people working for longer.

Finland has incorporated occupational health schemes with a flexible system of adapting older peoples' jobs to suit them as they approach retirement. In the Netherlands and France part-time working is being offered to older workers and in Italy an overhaul of their generous pension system is underway to try to reverse the trend of early retirement.

The programme also looks at Australia and the banking group, Westpac which has just completed a major recruitment programme, taking on 950 older workers.
