Gender at work

Despite nearly half the workforce now being made up of women this does not mean that most workplaces have equal numbers of men and women in them.

Things have changed for graduate entry jobs but, elsewhere, gender segregation in the workplace is much as it was decades ago.

Women work still predominantly in five sectors - caring, catering, cashiering, cleaning and clerical. Men, in these sectors, are in very short supply. Less than 2% of people working in childcare, for instance, are male.

Similarly, what has been seen traditionally as men's work - construction and motor trades - have hardly any women among their ranks.

So why is it that school leavers appear so unwilling to choose an atypical career? And what can we do to persuade them to go against the flow?

Should those gender-segregated sectors seeing severe skills shortages be targetting older workers who might be more prepared to work in non-traditional jobs?
