Scotland's shrinking workforce

In the first of a new series of Nice Work Philippa Lamb looks at Scotland's shrinking workforce.

With a low birth rate and relatively high death rate Scotland's population is forecast to fall below 5 million within fifteen years. Traditionally a net exporter of its own people the country is now trying to attract immigrants to fill skills gaps in its economy.

It also wants to encourage home grown talent to stay put and Scots who've left the country to return home.

Last year First Minister Jack McConnell set about wooing immigrants with the Scottish Executive's "Fresh Talent Initiative".

But in a country where ethnic minorities only account for 2% of the population and nearly 70 per cent of the locals say they'd like immigration levels kept low, how successful can he really expect to be?

The programme also looks at another potential pool of skilled workers: refugees. A third of the refugee community in this country are professionally qualified but how difficult is it for them to get into work?
