PRODUCTIVITY

The UK has had a productivity problem for decades - successive governments have tried to raise our game but we are still lagging behind our competitors when we look at just how productive we are.

However, Gordon Brown has placed productivity firmly on this Government's political agenda ever since he became Chancellor in 1997.

Paradoxically our economy is strong - employment, growth and inflation figures all show us to be doing well compared with the rest of Europe. So what's holding our productivity back?

In this week's Nice Work Philippa Lamb will be asking what exactly productivity is in the private and public sectors, how we measure it and how we can improve it.

The programme will also ask why, we in the workforce, should care about it and what our bosses are doing to try and make us more productive. There are comparisons with the United States where workers are almost 30 per cent more productive than UK workers and there's a report from Paris where the strict 35 hour working week is beginning to be questioned.
