Frank Johnson
Editor of the Spectator and Deputy Editor of the Sunday Telegraph who has died aged 70.
On news of his death the Spectator’s current editor Matthew D’Ancona described him as “a journalistic colossus”. The son of a pastry chef from Stoke Newington in London, Frank Johnson left school at fifteen and started work as a tea boy on the Sunday Express. From there, he rose through the journalistic ranks to become an influential and entertaining columnist, perhaps best known for his parliamentary sketches.

Jeane Kirkpatrick
UN Envoy under Reagan and political scientist who has died aged 80.
Jeane Kirkpatrick was America’s first woman ambassador to the United Nations. She was also an academic who developed much of the thinking embraced by Washington’s neo-conservatives. For many years, she was a supporter of the Democratic Party but in 1979 she wrote a celebrated article on American foreign policy which came to the attention of the Republican Ronald Reagan. Mrs Kirkpatrick was already very critical of Jimmy Carter’s administration and began to campaign for Mr Reagan and to help him prepare for televised debates. Once elected, the President appointed her as his UN envoy.

Peter Brayham
Stunt man and coordinator.
Peter Brayham was the stuntman and coordinator on many high profile TV dramas and successful Hollywood movies over the last forty years. From Dr. Who and Hustle to Bridget Jones Diary and Brannigan, directors called for Peter Brayham when they wanted a spectacular stunt safely carried out.
In an eventful career, Peter drove and crashed scores of cars, fell from countless high buildings and aircraft and choreographed many a convincing punch up. He was a stunt double for some of the great names of TV and cinema including American stars like John Wayne and James Coburn and British household names like Oliver Reed, Michael Caine and Dennis Waterman.

Augusto Pinochet
Chilean dictator who has died aged 91.
Much has been written and broadcast this week about the Chilean President Augusto Pinochet who died aged 91. The General was head of the armed forces when he seized power in 1973 – overthrowing the Communist government of President Salvador Allende. Within a year, Pinochet had taken the title of Supreme Chief of the Nation and appointed 10 military men to his cabinet of 15. Opponents were herded into the national football stadium, many were tortured and killed. Estimates say some three thousand people lost their lives during his time in power, although many more disappeared.
Pinochet’s supporters say he presided over an economic miracle in Chile, returning state owned companies to the private sector, slashing public expenditure and giving the country a growth rate three times higher than the average for South America. Margaret Thatcher – grateful for Chilean support during the Falklands Conflict of the 1980s - was a supporter. She met the General during his visits to Britain in the late 1990s.

Ahmet Ertegun
Founder of Atlantic Records who has died aged 83.
Ahmet Ertegun was the son of the Turkish Ambassador to the USA. He founded Atlantic Records with Herb Abramson in 1947 and quickly began signing up top jazz names like Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington. He also developed the careers of artists like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.
Ahmet Ertegun was born July 31st 1923. He died December 14th 2006.
