On the programme this week, long-term planning plus health and safety
We start our look at the long-term with a classic example from a minister of Louis XIV who arranged for a huge forest to be built in the 17th century so that France would have plenty of timber for its navy 300 years later. Jean-Baptist Colbert didn’t foresee metal ships, but as an unintended consequence, France has some very nice forests. Since the average tenure of a chief executive is somewhat shorter (less than five years in the case of FTSE100 companies), we ask our panel how they manage to think ahead.
We also look at health and safety. Workplace injuries are going down – they’ve declined by about 40 percent in the last two decades. Are our workplaces really safer or are there just fewer dangers in the modern workplace – and when does sensible regulation turn into red tape?
Our guests this week:
The Bottom Line cuts through the confusion of modern life to find out what's really important to consumers and businesses: the gimmicks, the people, the products - and the relationships.
