Listen to Gilbert's story

Philip Kubskele's herbal medicines Like all children growing up in Cape Town, when he was ill Matsabisa used traditional healers - what people in the West call witchdoctors. But he was a bright child and went on to study pharmacology at university. He ended up being awarded a PhD in the UK and working at Smith Kline Beecham.

But his interest in traditional methods of healing never left him. Instead of abandoning traditional medicine Dr Matsabisa has returned to his roots and is using western science not only to prove the medicines work but also to find out why they work and help traditional healers get the best out of their medications.

Traditional Medicine With 80% of Africans across the continent using herbalists this would be revolutionary. Add value to the herbalists potions, make them safer and you help the vast majority of the African population.

These medicines are cheap and they are available. More importantly, they work. His goal is to persuade more people - starting with South Africa's Health Ministry - to understand this and put money where it can work most effectively.
