Listen to Fola's story

Fola founded one of Nigeria's biggest banks, the Garanty Trust Bank, but he gave up his director's chair to fill a gap he felt his government was ignoring.

Fola was devastated by the enormous number of jobless graduates he saw on the streets and fearful of the negative impact their frustrations could have on the country as a whole. So, he set up a foundation to promote entrepreneurial flair with a mission to create 50,000 new jobs by 2015.

The FATE foundation The FATE Foundation takes a group of talented young people who want to set up in business and shows them how. Fola calls on contacts he's developed over the years to help him. Some of the most prestigious names in Nigerian business and finance share their expertise with the young entrepreneurs and then each student has a personal mentor to guide them through the key early years of their business. This is an important side effect of the project, by his example, Fola is promoting the growth of philanthropy in Nigeria where up until now it's been stony ground.

Already businesses are up and running and new jobs are being added to the Nigerian economy.
