Listen to Ndungi's story
He's a 30 year old poet and dramatist who, while at college in Nairobi, Kenya, became swept up in politics and found his art and political beliefs fused into what he calls "artivism".
On the streets, in parks and squares, Githuku and his troupe of actors and musicians perform wherever there are people. In a country where democracy is fragile, corruption rife and where, beyond the towns, the only news comes just through state radio these conscience-raising shows are the only alternative voice to be heard. And people are thirsty for it.
The plays and songs are all about corruption, democracy and people's rights. The regime of President Daniel Arap Moi did not take to Githuku, he often found himself on the receiving end of police brutality - whether beatings at a demonstration, imprisonment or even torture in police cells.
When Moi's rule ended last December I asked Githuku if he's ready to hang up his guitar and claim victory. Far from it, he is determined to carry on educating people about their rights and will keep a firm eye on the new government to ensure they do not slip back into the old ways.
