USA - Harry Shearer

Thursday 31 August 2006 11:30-12:00 (Radio 4 FM)

Repeated: Monday 4 September 2006 0:15-0:45 (Radio 4 FM)

Columnist Miles Kington engages in a deeply revealing interview of an entertainer from a not so distant culture to examine the humour and satire of their country.

Harry Shearer is probably best known in the UK for his outstanding voice work on The Simpsons, and as the moustachioed bass player Derek Smalls in the godfather of all spoof documentaries, This is Spinal Tap.

But Shearer was active in the late sixties as part of an emerging troupe of radio satirists called The Credibility Gap, who began as a trio of satirical daily newscasters on Pasadena rock station KRLA-AM. He continues to broadcast a satirical programme weekly from KCRW in Los Angeles, called Le Show.
