Bryan Gallagher
Reg and Sybil Hough at home in Lewisham, 1957

Train crash

Listen to the item

Over the past few weeks we've heard about eyewitness accounts of the Lewisham train disaster in December 1957 when two trains, one steam one electric, collided in dense fog. Reg and Sybil Hough's flat backed onto that section of railway line and they were the first on the scene - Sybil put through the first 999 call. They were both 27 and had been married for three years. Reg was an engineer, Sybil a hairdresser but that night both discovered they possessed physical and spiritual resources they'd never before experienced or suspected.
