Pippa Courtney-Sutton was so worried about getting a bad haircut she flew all the way to Mallorca to her regular hairdresser. She came into the Home Truths studio to tell us why...
When Pippa Courtney-Sutton gave up life on the ocean wave for a shore-based existence she settled in Mallorca, always having her hair done by Leo. The familiarity made her feel less anxious. "Iím frightened Iím going to come out looking like an extra from Star Trek or somethingÖIíve had lots of those sorts of haircuts".

Pippa believes our hair is part of our personality, part of who we are, and thatís why walking into a salon and meeting a stranger who doesnít know us and is going to cut our hair is such a terrifying experience. Itís always distressing coming out of the hairdressers looking like something that really isnít you. "A couple of times Iíve been so upset about it, Iíve come home, looked at it, washed it five times, realised itís not going to change, probably had a few glasses of wine and set about it with the kitchen scissors".
When Pippa came back from Spain initially she just couldnít face a London salon, so she flew four times a year to Mallorca so that Leo could cut her hair. Part of this was to do with the fact that Leo used to work on yachts as she had done, and that she initially had her hair cut sitting on a sunny dock with a beer in her hand, which made it very different from the terrifying experience of entering a salon.
Finally, a friend pointed out that it seemed a little excessive - though Pippa hadnít thought of it that way - and she re-established contact with a hairdresser she had seen some fifteen years before.
As far as Pippa is concerned, getting your hair cut "is therapy in a way, because if your hairís looking good you feel a lot better, you feel a lot more confident".
