An informative and imaginative series about the rise and career of the British common sailor over three centuries from the Armada to Trafalgar.
Four programmes telling the story of some of the most dramatic naval battles in British history through the voices of ordinary sailors who took part in them - climbing the rigging, sweeping deck, manning the guns.
We go on board with the English fleet hounding the Spanish Armada; we watch in horror as the Dutch sail up the River Medway threatening invasion; we listen to the agonies of a wounded seaman who has helped to secure a great victory at Porto Bello in Panama; and we share the triumph and tragedy on board Nelson's ship at Trafalgar.
