Alan Leith tells the story of an eccentric recluse.
Mary Florence Bonham Christie purchased Brownsea Island, off the Dorset coast, in 1927. She banned people from its shores and allowed the animals on the island to roam free. The island remains an important nature reserve, with an atmosphere all of its own.
The programme features reminiscences from those who knew her and naturalists who have inherited her unique legacy. Dramatised scenes are written by Roy Apps and directed by Celia de Wolff.
