A Dream of Eleanor

Friday 5 December 2008 11:00-11:30 (Radio 4 FM)

Former president of Ireland Mary Robinson examines the role that Eleanor Roosevelt had in producing the UN Declaration of Human Rights, which is 60 years old this year.

Appointed to the UN General Assembly by her husband's successor as US president, Harry Truman, she was subsequently elected chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights by her fellow delegates. It was from this position that she helped to draft the Declaration that still holds firm today.

Featuring contributions from Geoffrey Robertson QC, Shami Chakrabarti and Eleanor's grandson Curtis Roosevelt.
