John Curwen and His Moveable Doh

Rev Roy Jenkins tells the story of nineteenth-century English Congregational minister John Curwen, who sought a way to steer people away from alcohol, which he regarded as the curse of the Victorian age. His solution was to offer an alternative form of entertainment consisting of singing in the chapels. A man of no recognisable musical ability, he devised the tonic sol-fa method of annotation by which everyone could read music at sight.
