When Dave was eight he saw the 3 Para band performing and he knew instantly that was his future. After joining to play the cornet and getting his wings, 2 Para were about to leave for Belize, when Dave was told to report for the Falklands, which he thought were near Scotland. His Salvation Army parents were running a children’s home in Malaysia at the time, but he was waved off by his father, who was over for a funeral.

On his 21st birthday Dave landed on the Falklands and eventually relieved Port Stanley. But on that journey, Dave experienced events that would change his life dramatically. On the march towards Camilla Creek he found himself thrown into a trench full of dead Argentineans to avoid being shot. At Goose Green he watched 12 of his friends shot down within 10 minutes, and his best friend die in his arms. When the Galahad was hit he dragged the wounded out of the sea and was almost killed himself at Wireless Ridge.
Dave's life difficulties did not end when he returned home. He couldn't take training seriously so left the army and started to drink and fight. He got married, separated and finally went to jail. With psychiatric help and support from his parents, Dave turned a corner and slowly rebuilt his life. Even today his mind is haunted.
Twenty years on, he talks about his experiences and how they changed his life forever.
