Programme 4: Surgeon Commander Rick Jolly
Saturday 27 April 10:30-11:00am
The Red and Green Life Machine
"The entrance fee to Ajax Bay that night was 10% or more burns".

Dr. Rick Jolly, Surgeon Commander, set up and ran the Ajax Bay field hospital during the Falklands war. Ajax Bay was a converted disused abattoir and it was affectionately known as the Red and Green life machine by those in the know: Red and Green because of the parachute medics who wore a red beret, and the Royal Marines medics who wore green; and more importantly, because no one brought in alive, died there. Simon Weston

Rick and his team had a busy war. They treated survivors suffering horrific burns after the ships HMS Tristam and Sir Galahad were bombed. Dr. Jolly had to make a decision - his makeshift hospital could only cope with so many casualties. For the burned Welsh Guards, the regiment in which Simon Weston served, the entrance fee was a costly one - 10% or more burns. The hospital also dealt with the aftermath of the battles of Goose Green, Mount Harriet and Longden, repairing bullet wounds, performing amputations where necessary, and also treating Argentinian casualties. He was later awarded an O.B.E. for his efforts.
