"Mike Till’s ship, HMS Sheffield was four days from home when it changed direction and joined the British Task Force. Everything then changed forever.
Chief Petty Officer Michael Till was about to return home after five months at sea. His wife Audrey Till and three daughters were eagerly looking forward to his homecoming.
That was until his ship, the HMS Sheffield, was needed for the Task Force and turned around to set sail for the Falkland islands.
Michael was in the computer room when the Exocet hit HMS Sheffield. He stayed there because he knew that working computers gave the ship a chance to defend itself. He lost his life.
On his final journey to the Falklands Michael had written to his wife and family every day. He had told them how much the past 15 years of marriage had meant to him, and how much he was looking forward to the next 15. He'd pledged to Audrey that when he was back, he wouldn't waste a moment of time with her. His love for his family was strong and despite their tragedy, Audrey refused to let the family fall apart. Through Audrey's words and Michael's letters, this programme tells their story.
Mike's letters are read by Stephen Tompkinson.
