Programme 6 - The Islander's Story
Twenty years after the outbreak of war in the South Atlantic, Radio 4
tells the story of its impact upon the lives of the protagonists and
their families.
The Falklands War was sudden, short, and bloody. Nearly a thousand
British and Argentineans died during the conflict, when the right of the
Islanders to British citizenship was defended. The victorious Margaret
Thatcher secured her place in Westminster and on the world stage. The defeated
Leopoldo Galtieri stepped down, clearing the way for a return to democracy
in Argentina.
But what of the impact on individual lives? Falkland Families tells the
story of war through the experiences of those directly involved alongside
their families. It is not only interested in the soldiers who
took part in the battles but also their parents, siblings, partners and
children. This is not a straight-forward history of the conflict. Falkland Families is a series of humane and compassionate accounts of the
conflict, from people who, though caught up in the same events, may have
very different perspectives, memories and emotions about those few
weeks between March and June, 1982.
